Uri Thaler

The Uri Thaler was one of the few Swiss coins that bore the distinctive Uri coat of arms, featuring a bull's head, symbolizing the canton's fierce independence in the face of Habsburg pressures. This design choice reflected Uri's role in the Swiss Confederacy's early struggles, minted as it was in Altdorf from the early 17th century onward. Silver for these coins came from local sources or imported bullion, often recycled from worn foreign thalers to maintain weight standards.

Details vary by year. Some issues show crude strikes due to makeshift minting equipment in the mountains, while others display finer artistry from skilled engravers. We don't know exact mintages for most variants; records were spotty even then, and many were lost in later conflicts.
