The most intriguing aspect of the Dutch Guiana Copper Stiver is how it was minted in the Netherlands—often in Utrecht—and then shipped across the Atlantic to a humid colony, where it had to withstand everything from sweaty palms to tropical downpours.

These coins, struck in copper, served as the backbone for everyday transactions in Dutch Guiana from 1766 to 1826. A single stiver might cover a loaf of bread or a ferry crossing on the Suriname River. The design was straightforward: one side bore the arms of the United Provinces, the other the denomination and year.

Exact mintage figures are murky; records from that era were poorly kept, and many likely perished in colonial archives. Still, variations exist due to different dies and possible counterfeits, which kept things interesting for circulators.
