The Austrian 5 Groschen coin was minted in staggering quantities—up to hundreds of millions annually at its peak—making it a cornerstone of daily commerce in post-war Austria.

That volume meant it turned up everywhere, from market stalls to school lunch money, yet few noticed its subtle design evolution over the decades. Early versions featured a federal eagle on the obverse, a symbol of the new republic, struck at the Vienna Mint using copper-nickel alloys that held up well against wear.

Variations did occur; for instance, the 1970s saw a slight redesign of the eagle's feathers, though records on exact tooling changes are spotty. As for rarity, don't bother hunting; most years are plentiful, except perhaps the 1952 issue, whose mintage we know was high but precise figures were never documented.
