Aruba 1 Cent

The Aruba 1 cent coin, introduced in 1986, was the first bronze denomination in the island's new florin currency, symbolizing its shift to autonomous status.

Struck at the Royal Dutch Mint, it featured a simple aloe plant on the reverse, a nod to Aruba's landscape, and the national coat of arms on the obverse. Its composition was a standard bronze alloy, weighing just 1.5 grams, which made it practical for daily use but prone to wear in tropical conditions.

Production ran annually until 2015, with variations in mintage that reflected economic fluctuations, though exact figures for some years are murky due to archival gaps. I’ve seen plenty like it accumulate patina over time, a testament to their circulation in markets and pockets.

One peculiarity: the coin's size invited confusion with foreign cents, but that's just the nature of small change in a globalized world.
